“We don’t problem solve; we problem find. There is a treasure trove of answers out there just waiting to be discovered.”
Tyler Murphy

Tyler Murphy began training in December of 2012 after being curious about grappling for years. Due to other sport commitments he was never able to try wrestling, so when he dropped in for a class he was instantly hooked. His passion for grappling led him to a long career of training every day, competing on the weekends, and even making bi-weekly trips up to Unity to train with Eddie Cummings to indulge his fondness for leg locks.
Tyler started his training under Coach Kyle Dalton, but after his retirement was stuck in limbo with his teammates. It was then that his friend, Tim Dawson, reached out about his starting a new gym that he found a home at High Noon. He trained there from their inception in 2018 until leaving to open The Scrapyard, and still visits to train whenever he can. In 2023, he received his Black Belt from Coaches Tim Dawson and Matt Miller for his toughness, skill, hard work, and dedication to the sport.
Tyler had an extensive competition career, competing at major events like ADCC Trials, Fight 2 Win, IBJJF, and many local tournaments. He was a regular medal winner at Grappling Industries, Newbreed, Copa Nova and NAGA tournaments. At some point during his stint at purple belt, Tyler started really deep diving into the coaching realm, which led him to start taking a step back from competition and focusing more on how people learn best. He loves to implement the Constraints Led Approach (CLA) into his coaching style, making a conscious effort to focus not only on the individual, but also the psychology of the sport. His goal is to make sure every person who steps through the doors at The Scrapyard has fun, feels included, and is motivated to experiment and grow. To Tyler, the best part is seeing a person meet their own personal goals, no matter how big or small. He is constantly striving to become a better coach, not only through constantly refining his teaching methodology, but also through his commitment to his team. He is always looking for feedback, and hopes that the training environment invites open communication between the coach and athlete.
Outside of coaching you can usually find Tyler through his photography business, FeverShots. Inspired by the desire to improve the quality of photography in combat sports, he usually has a camera on hand. Otherwise you can find him nerding out with friends about pour over coffee, cooking up something fun in the kitchen, or just relaxing with his blind cat, Ellie.
